38-0 Formations Guide: All 6 Tactics Explained

What each shape needs, what it does well — and when to pick it after the draft.

38-0 offers six formations, and the golden rule is simple: let the draft choose your shape. Pick the formation that fits the eleven players the slot machine gave you — not the other way around. Here is what each one demands.

4-3-3 — The All-Rounder

Shape: GK; back four; one CDM with two central midfielders; two wingers and a striker. The most balanced option in the game. It needs two genuine wide forwards (RW/LW), a holding midfielder who can screen the defence, and full-backs comfortable joining attacks. If your draft gave you a bit of everything, 4-3-3 rarely lets you down — and the single pivot makes it a favourite for perfect season attempts.

4-4-2 — The Classic

Shape: GK; back four; flat four in midfield; two strikers. English football's default for a decade, and the natural home for drafts that produced two elite centre-forwards — think Shearer and Cole, or Henry and Bergkamp. It asks a lot of the two central midfielders, so make sure at least one of them is a genuine all-rounder.

4-2-3-1 — The Modern Shape

Shape: GK; back four; double pivot; three attacking midfielders behind one striker. Built for a draft headlined by a brilliant number 10 — the CAM is the system's heartbeat. Two holding midfielders make it the most defensively secure shape in the pool, but your lone striker needs to be clinical, because everything funnels through them.

3-5-2 — The Wing-Back System

Shape: GK; three centre-backs; two wing-backs; a midfield three; two strikers. A specialist's choice. It only works if your draft delivered two natural wing-backs (RWB/LWB) and three starting-quality centre-backs — check the squads database for alternative positions before committing. When it clicks, you get width, a two-man strike force and a spare man at the back all at once.

4-4-2 Diamond — The Midfield Box

Shape: GK; back four; CDM at the base; two shuttlers; a CAM behind two strikers. Narrow by design — all the width comes from the full-backs. It suits drafts stacked with central midfielders and a creative playmaker, but it will expose ordinary full-backs, so only pick it when your RB and LB are up to running the flanks alone.

3-4-3 — The Risk Taker

Shape: GK; three centre-backs; a flat midfield four; two wingers and a striker. The most aggressive shape available: three attackers high up the pitch and constant pressure. The trade-off is space behind the wing-backs — if your three centre-backs are not all quick and elite, you will concede chances you cannot afford in a 38-0-0 run.

How to Choose After the Draft

Count your assets by line. Two elite strikers points to 4-4-2, 3-5-2 or the Diamond. Two great wingers points to 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. A superstar CAM points to 4-2-3-1 or the Diamond. Three top centre-backs open up the back-three shapes. And remember that players carry alternative positions — a winger who doubles as a CAM can unlock a shape that looked impossible. The biggest individual prizes by position are ranked in the best players guide.

FAQ

What is the best formation in 38-0?

There is no single best formation — the right choice is whichever shape fits the XI you drafted. 4-3-3 is the most forgiving all-rounder, while 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 reward drafts with two elite strikers.

How many formations are there in 38-0?

Six: 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, 4-4-2 Diamond and 3-4-3. Winning the league with all six unlocks the Master Tactician achievement.

Can players play out of position?

Players have alternative positions listed on their squad page, which gives you flexibility when fitting your draft into a shape. A winger who can also play CAM is far more useful than one who cannot.

Which formation is best for a perfect season?

Perfect seasons are built on defensive solidity, so shapes with a dedicated holding midfielder — 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 Diamond — are the most popular choices for 38-0-0 attempts.
